The Hamilton Island Resort, one of the Popular Queensland Getaway on the Great Barrier Reef, Reportedly Set to be Acquired by US Investment Giant.
An iconic tropical holiday destination situated within the Great Barrier Reef has entered into an agreement for sale to a US-based private equity firm in a deal reportedly valued at 1.2 billion Australian dollars.
“We are honored to continue the vision and dedication of the family owners has built in the heart of the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef,” stated a company executive.
Details of the Sale
Headquartered in New York, Blackstone – which also owns the hospitality group Crown Resorts – confirmed it had entered into an agreement to acquire the Hamilton Island resort from the Oatley family owners, pending standard regulatory approvals.
The family released a statement saying they were pleased with the new owners of an island that holds a “special place in the hearts of countless Australians” and is referred to as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.
Hamilton Island's Scale and Features
Positioned roughly 900 kilometers north of Brisbane and approximately 500 kilometers south of Cairns, Hamilton covers more than 1,130 hectares across two islands.
Roughly 30% of the area is built upon, featuring a substantial array of amenities:
- Five separate hotels
- More than 20 restaurants and bars
- 20 retail outlets
- An championship 18-hole golf course on neighboring Dent Island
- A boat marina and a functioning airport
Hamilton Island is noted as a major job provider in the Whitsundays, supporting a large on-island community and workforce, as well as a wide network of regional partners, suppliers, and local businesses.
A Look Back at The Island's History
The late Robert Oatley, a well-known yachtsman and winemaker, originally purchased the resort for A$200 million in 2003 after spotting the island from aboard a yacht while sailing through the Whitsunday passage.
Hamilton's development boom initially started in the 1980s. In the decades before that, it was home to simple iron huts and more humble quarters that housed Australian vacationers from inland areas and from the south.

Blackstone also owns hotels and luxury resorts in several countries, including Japan, India, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and the United States.
The area is the traditional lands and seas of the Ngaro Indigenous people. Its name derives from Captain James Cook, who navigated the HMS Endeavour through the island group on June 3, 1770, which was Whit Sunday.
