Larry Summers Resigns from OpenAI Board
Ex-Treasury chief Larry Summers is departing from the board at the artificial intelligence firm, just days after a series of digital correspondence between him and deceased financier the accused trafficker became widely known.
He commented in a statement that he was "grateful for the chance to have participated, optimistic about the potential of the company, and look forward observing their development".
The former Harvard president, who previously led the prestigious university, stated on earlier this week that he would be stepping back from public responsibilities due to his connections with the convicted sex offender.
Message Exchange
The recently released emails demonstrated that the official corresponded with the financier until the 24 hours preceding the financier's 2019 apprehension for accused sex trafficking of minors.
In another announcement, the technology organization said it understood his determination to depart.
"We value his many contributions and the insight he provided to the Board," the organization commented.
Political Context
This development follows after both chambers of the US legislature voted on Tuesday to endorse a bill that would compel the US justice department to make public its records on the case.
The measure will subsequently proceed to the office of the White House for approval. He has stated he expects to approve the legislation, after modifying his stance on the matter following pushback from his supporters.
Message Details
A group of Epstein-related correspondence disclosed by the House Oversight Committee last week included several prominent individuals in the billionaire's previous network, without implying any legal wrongdoing by those individuals.
The messages revealed that the economist and Epstein regularly had dinners together, with the billionaire often seeking to connect the official to notable global figures.
Personal Response
After the correspondence were made available with the public, the former official said he accepted "total ownership for my misguided choice to maintain corresponding with Jeffrey Epstein".
He continued that he wanted "to reestablish faith and mend relationships with the persons nearest to me".
Previous Positions
The economist served in high-level positions under party leaders; serving as treasury secretary under Bill Clinton, and as leader of the economic advisory body under President Obama.
He led the institution from five years and continues to be a faculty member there. When announcing his withdrawal from public duties previously on this week, he said he would maintain his educational duties.
Further Repercussions
Following Summers' declaration on earlier this week, the Center for American Progress, a progressive policy institute in the capital where the professor was a prominent member, announced that the economist was no longer connected with the organization.
He became part of the leadership of the technology firm, which makes ChatGPT, in the previous year - following a failed attempt to oust its chief executive OpenAI's head.
