Giants QB Wilson Responds at Former Coach Sean Payton Over Quarterback Remarks
New York Giants signal-caller Russell Wilson did not hold back on social media this week, responding to recent comments from his ex-mentor Sean Payton.
"Classless... but not surprised...," Wilson stated on X. "Had no idea you're still bounty hunting 15+ years later through the press."
The quarterback's remarks pointed to the notorious bounty scandal controversy from 2009-11, when Payton was coaching the Saints.
During that period, the league determined that the Saints had rewarded players for delivering aggressive tackles on opponents. As a result, Payton received a suspension from the NFL for a full year.
What Sparked the Recent Exchange
The quarterback's response came after Payton delivered comments following the Broncos' historic comeback victory over the New York. Payton suggested that the Giants had "found a little spark" with Jaxson Dart, who has taken over Wilson as the starting quarterback.
Additionally, Payton hinted that he had told Giants owner John Mara that he would prefer playing against Wilson over Dart.
"I spoke to John Mara recently and I said, 'We hoped that change would've happened long after our game,'" Payton commented.
Context of the Wilson-Payton Partnership
- The quarterback was traded to the Denver from Seattle in 2022 and signed a five-year, $245M contract.
- The team finished 4-11 in his first season before the team hired Payton, who was returning to the sidelines after a period in TV commentary.
- Payton replaced Wilson 15 games into the 2023 campaign, a move that ensured the player from suffering an injury.
Had Wilson remained on the team by spring 2024, his $37 million pay for the following year would have been locked in. Ultimately, Wilson was released, marking the ugly split between the quarterback and his mentor.
