Democrats Criticize Trump After He Claims They Should Face Death Penalty

Democratic officials expressed outrage after former President Donald Trump charged a group of Democratic representatives of being "betrayers" and asserted they should be arrested and sentenced "through capital punishment" following their publication of a contentious video.

The Content That Sparked the Controversy

The clip, shared on Tuesday, includes six Democratic elected officials who formerly served in military or security roles.

"As we did, you all swore an vow to defend and support this founding document," the representatives stated in the brief video. "At present, the dangers to our governing document don't only come from foreign nations, but from right here at home. Our regulations are clear, you can decline illegal orders, you can refuse illegal orders, you should decline improper directives. No one has to execute commands that violate the legal system or our founding principles."

The Former President's Furious Response

The video message seemed to prompt a heated reaction from the former president.

On later in the week, Trump posted on his social media platform: "This represents SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these turncoats to our United States should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."

In a separate post, he declared: "This represents really concerning, and Harmful to our United States. Their comments cannot be enabled to stand. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"

In a subsequent post, he stated: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, subject to punishment by DEATH!" He also reposted a declaration that read: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"

Party Officials React

Following Trump's comments on Thursday, Top Democrats released a combined announcement censuring the comments.

"Political violence has no place in the United States," they wrote. "Elected officials who appeared in the video all served our country with tremendous national pride and distinction. We clearly censure Donald Trump's disgusting and risky threats of violence against congressional representatives, and urge House Republicans to vigorously do the same."

The opposition officials also said that they had been in communication with security officials "to ensure the security of these members and their relatives."

"Donald Trump must immediately delete these unhinged digital publications and recant his dangerous language before he leads to violence," the announcement continued.

Lawmakers' Strong Response

The representatives who participated in the video also released a statement.

"We serve as former service members and national security professionals who care for this country and made an pledge to protect and support the constitution of the United States," they stated. "That oath is permanent, and we plan to honor it. No intimidation, intimidation, or call for violence will prevent us from that important duty."

"The most revealing aspect is that the former president considers it punishable by death for us to restate the law," they stated. "Military personnel should understand that we have their protection as they fulfill their pledge to the founding principles and responsibility to adhere to only proper directives. It is not only the correct thing to do, but also our responsibility."

They continued: "All citizens must unite and condemn the former president's calls for our murder and partisan aggression. This is a moment for moral clarity."

Further Partisan Responses

The Democratic Senate minority leader also denounced Trump's comments and published on digital platforms: "It's important to understand: the President of the United States is demanding the capital punishment of elected officials."

He added: "This constitutes an clear THREAT. All senators, each house member, every American – regardless of party – should censure this right away and unconditionally."

The Conservative official justified Trump's assertion that the Democrats had participated in "rebellion", labeling the video as "wildly inappropriate", stating: "It is very harmful, you have important representatives of the government instructing soldiers to defy commands, I think that represents unprecedented in US history."

The Conservative representative also according to sources informed the press that in what he examined of Trump's publications, Trump was "explaining the crime of treason" but that "lawyers have to analyze the wording and decide all that."

Executive Branch Reaction

During a White House press conference on Thursday afternoon, when inquired by a journalist, "Is the president want to execute congressional representatives?", the White House press secretary answered: "Absolutely not."

"It's important to note about what the president is reacting to," the spokesperson said. "We see sitting members of the US Congress who conspired to arrange a recorded statement to individuals of the US military, to current military personnel urging them to ignore the commander in chief's legal commands."

She said: "The purity of our military relies on the hierarchy, and if that structure is violated, it can cause people getting killed, it can result in chaos, and that is exactly what these congressional representatives ... are basically encouraging."
