Blast Takes 3 Police Officers During Property Removal Procedure in Northern Italy
Three police officers lost their lives and at least 15 people got wounded in an apparently premeditated gas explosion at a rural property in northern Italy.
Sequence of Events
The detonation was triggered as police and firefighters entered the residence in the vicinity of the city of Verona to execute an court-ordered eviction for two brothers and a sister who were older adults.
Each of the three victims who died were members of the Carabinieri force.
Investigation Developments
Two individuals were arrested at the scene and another man who fled subsequent to the blast was located not long after. Each of them have been admitted to medical facility.
The blast could be heard approximately 5 kilometers away and photographs from the scene displayed the property left as a pile of rubble.
“This is a time for grieving,” commented the Minister of the Interior Minister Piantedosi, who mentioned that attempts had been made to remove the brother and sister trio in the earlier times.
Background and Motive
The leader of the Veneto region, President Zaia, explained the property was under an eviction order due to debts incurred by the property owners.
Mediators had been dispatched to speak to the family members who had barricaded themselves into the house. When the officers reached the location soon after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities think a family member set off the blast.
“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” local police chief Commander Papagno informed news outlets.
“A gas cylinder had been activated, and the blast immediately struck our personnel,” he added.
Petrol bombs were also located at the site, the Interior Minister said.
Injuries and Destruction
Those injured by the incident comprised 11 other members of the Carabinieri as well as a trio of personnel of national police and a emergency responder.
Based on information from the Verona prosecutor, the building was in a derelict state and had lacked electrical service.
He thought the explosion had taken place on a story above the access point and stated to journalists it was a “premeditated and voluntary homicide”. Just prior to the incident, he mentioned members had “detected a whistling noise, likely the gas cylinders being activated”.
Neighbor Statements
“Everyone was aware the circumstances were severe,” neighbors informed local news, noting that the three had in the past stated to “cause an explosion” rather than leave the house.
“The explosion had left a ‘terrible, very painful and dramatic toll’.”
Defence Minister Guido Crosetto stood alongside other government officials in paying tribute to the three men who had been killed in the service of their country.
