Aaron Rai Secures the Abu Dhabi Title in Dramatic Play-Off Battle Against Tommy Fleetwood
The 30-year-old golfer demonstrated remarkable nerve to secure the prestigious Abu Dhabi title on the final day, beating his compatriot in a dramatic playoff after a rollercoaster final round of competition.
The Englishman sank a decisive birdie putt from around eight feet to clinch the victory, echoing his sole prior tournament triumph at the Scottish Open in 2020, which was also a playoff win over Fleetwood.
Sunday's Play Drama
The champion entered the final round with a single stroke lead over fellow Englishman Fleetwood and Denmark’s Højgaard. He finished with a overall score of twenty-under after a topsy-turvy, 67 final round that included seven birdies and a pair of bogeys.
Fleetwood moved a stroke clear with the 16th and 17th remaining after a birdie putt on the 16th, but his rival pulled level again on the 17th and then missed a 10-foot birdie attempt to claim victory on the last hole.
Playoff Climax
That led to a play-off at Yas Links where the eventual winner prevailed to take the championship and $1.5 million (ÂŁ1.13m) in prize money.

Notable Contenders
The Northern Irish star found himself a bit too far to make up, finishing one shot short in a tie for third with Højgaard, after a stunning 62 closing round of ten-under. It was McIlroy’s lowest-ever score on the European Tour, comprising eight birdies and an eagle.
The Danish golfer fired six birdie putts of his as well, but his hopes of leading the standings were hit by a dropped shot on the twelfth. English golfer Richard Mansell produced an excellent final-round 63 to finish tied for fifth with Australian Hillier.
